Subject matching and sentence architecture

Clause Compass

Turkish can keep a subject inside a suffix. In English, an opening -ing or V3 phrase often borrows the subject of the main clause. This lab makes that invisible arrow visible.

How does a participle clause find its direction?

Do not read these structures as “-ing equals present tense.” English non-finite clauses often borrow time from the main verb; subject, order, and context supply the rest of the meaning.

Live example

Walking into the meeting, I checked my notes.

Toplantıya girerken notlarımı kontrol ettim.

Why does this sentence work?

Both actions occupy the same time frame. The -ing clause attaches to the subject of the main clause: the person walking and checking is I.
